Eye care

Dorset County Hospital’s eye (ophthalmology) department is also known as the Royal Eye Infirmary (REI).

The department is located next to the large blue and red sculpture known as ‘The Pencils’.

The REI is a very busy department dealing with some 22,600 appointments, 4,000 procedures and 1,600 operations a year.  Most frequently encountered conditions such as age related maculopathy, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts are treated at the Dorchester unit and they have good connections with specialist centres if referral is needed for complex conditions.

Children are also treated at the REI and most of these clinics take place in the Children’s Centre which is about 100 yards south of the main eye department.
